Southern-Fried Yuletide in a Doublewide with Stage West

In this hilarious, fast-paced comedy, "Double Wide Texas Christmas," inhabitants of one of the smaller trailer parks in Texas - four doublewides and a shed - are thrown for a loop after realizing the nearby town of Tugaloo is determined to annex their park. And they're already dealing with plenty.

Joveeta Crumpler has had it up to here, having been passed over again for a promotion at work. On top of this, she has an ongoing battle keeping her feisty mother, Caprice, out of the local bar. She also worries her good-ol'-boy brother, Baby Crumpler, is taking his participation in a womanless beauty pageant way too seriously. Her big-hearted best friend, Georgia Dean Rudd, is struggling to keep her diner and finances afloat and just can't curb her impulse to take in every stray cat, possum and armadillo that wanders by.

Then there's Big Ethel Satterwhite, who's nobody's fool. But tough as she is, she's continually frustrated by her clients at Stairway To Heaven Retirement Village as well as her mule-headed husband, O.C., who shows far more affection for his Barcalounger than he does for Big Ethel. And all the residents are plagued by Haywood Sloggett, the curmudgeon from across the road, who loathes their 'trailer-trash' ways, especially their keeping a life-size illuminated nativity scene up year 'round.

But these friends, enemies and neighbors realize they'll have to work together to defeat the encroaching annexation if they - and their way of life - have a snowball's chance to survive being swallowed up by 'the big guys.' The rollicking mayhem of this flat-out funny Jones Hope Wooten comedy escalates as the residents attempt to secede from Texas, discover a traitor in their midst and turn the tables in a surprising and side-splitting finale. So grab your Stetson and come on over to Doublewide, Texas, where life is double the fun, double the joy, and where audiences double over with laughter!

Ocean Shores Lions Club hosts Free Thanksgiving Dinner

Ocean Shores Lions Club again hosts the Free Thanksgiving Dinner. It's the sixth year for this tradition served 1-4 pm, Thursday, November 22.

Volunteers serve over 300 with a dinner including turkey, ham, mashed potatoes with gravy, yams, green beans and rolls. Save room for dessert.

Donations come from Ocean Shores IGA, North Beach Senior Center, Ocean Shores VFW Post 8956, Quinault Beach Resort & Casino, Church of Latter-Day Saints ane more. Lions Club hosts the event at 832 Ocean Shores Blvd.

This gives everyone more than a meal. It's a get-together where you may chat with the attendees and volunteers. You may even get a box of leftovers to go home with you.

PAWS hosts annual silent auction and dinner

North Beach home to Washington State Chili Cookoff 2018

Washington State Chili Cookoff 2018 qualified four competitors to the World Food Championships from the October 7 event hosted by St. John’s Chapel by the Sea Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) in Moclips, Washington. Categories were for Texas Chili Red recipes and for Open Chili. “Spicy Spirit” Leonard Kellogg Memorial trophy was also presented. There were 14 competitors at the cookoff from Elma to Everett.

Awards for the Texas Chili Red category were: 1st Place - Ross Lunbeck of Lacey, 2nd Place - Pat Maddock of University Place, 3rd Place - Dave Bock of Auburn, 4th Place - Steve Hart of Everett and 5th Place - Cindy Bock of Auburn. Awards for the Open Chili category (all other types of chili): 1st Place - Dave Bock of Auburn, 2nd Place - Pat Maddock of University Place and 3rd Place - Cindy Bock of Auburn.

The "Spicy Spirit" Leonard Kellogg Memorial Award went to Josh Ericksen of Tacoma. This was the first year this award was presented in honor of Leonard Kellogg of Lynnwood who died September 4, 2018. He had competed in the chili cookoff for years and represented the Washington State Chili Cookoff in 2017, taking 11th place finish at the World Food Championships.

Also competing were Rhonda Lunbeck of Lacey, Brena McDermott of Lake Stevens, Hillary Patton of Yelm, Emily and Tasha Simpson of Lacey, Keifer Schrimsher of Seattle, Jim Volz of Elma and Frank Volz of Grayland.

Races were tight, with ties broken for category winners and others with only one or two separating places. Judges from St. John’s Chapel by the Sea and the community judged each chili on its merits. Rules were followed as a Tolbert Chili Cookoff. This is the society founded by Frank X. Tolbert from the roots of the original first chili cookoffs in Terlingua, Texas.

Golden Tickets to compete in the World Food Championships have been presented to four competitors. Those representing will be Josh Ericksen, Brena McDermott, Keifer Scrimsher and Frank Volz. Volz is headed to the WFC for the third year, last year finishing 12th. The other three will participate for the first time at this level. They also were all new to the state cookoff.

“We were so pleased to have veterans and new cooks join us for this year’s Washington State Chili Cookoff,” Cindy Stearns event producer said. “It’s wonderful having new people join us to carry on the chili tradition in Washington state. And this is the third year we’ve sent competitors to WFC.”

The World Food Championships is the largest competition in Food Sport, where grand champions of previous events convene for a chance at winning the ultimate food crown and a share of hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money. WFC is also the springboard for many up and coming culinary stars and home cooks as they seek TV fame through many well-known food shows and acting opportunities.

Ocean Shores has something unique to a city in the state of Washington. It's the only city-owned radio station for this state. And it's run by volunteers.

Operating 24-hours a day, tune in to hear local news, sports, music and more. You'll find it at 91.3 FM on your radio dial or online at KOSWradio.com.

Find out if the waves are breaking over the jetty, if something's going on in the Ocean Shores Convention Center or if the Hyaks are playing. You'll get local knowledge and learn what's happening in the Shores.

Radio personalities select their music playlist and style. Their music library consists of over 80,000+ songs.

Tommy T is the radio board chairperson. He's on the air with Tumultuous Tuesday 10 am-2 pm. He's joined by Bill G, Brother Darrell & Dr. Dave when they talk sports on "Sportszilla" Monday 10 am-noon. And on Saturday, Tom and Brook get your morning started with Saturday Morning Brunch 9 am-noon.

Station Program Manager Papa "B" has music experience from the 1960s as a drummer. Starting an entertainment company in 1980, he performed as a mobile DJ to TV commercials. He has two Classic Rock shows on KOSW "Rockin’ the Shores" Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-10 pm along with "Hot Country" show on Saturdays 6-10 pm.

Tune in to hear more of the DJs giving you a local flavor of Ocean Shores. The Sound of the Shores is your community radio station.

Washington State Chili Cookoff sends winner to World Food Championships

Washington State Chili Cookoff heats up the North Beach Sunday, October 7. The winner of the event receives a Golden Ticket. That’s the entry into the World Food Championships (WFC) in November in Orange Beach, Alabama.

This event features a wide array of competitors, from veterans to newer chefs who will be testing their chili skills for the first time. The host venue for this chili cookoff is St. John’s Chapel by the Sea Presbyterian Church in Moclips.

“Our focus this year is to send our winner from the Washington State Chili Cookoff to WFC ,” said Cynthia Stearns, event organizer. “We have sent several competitors [to the WFC] over the years. When they make the top 10 at WFC, prize monies are awarded. The winner in Chili at that competition is awarded $10,000.”

WFC is the largest competition in Food Sport. According to WFC, the 2017 event was the largest Food Sport tournament in history with well over 1500 contestants on 449 official teams. This included people from 42 states and 13 countries while 30,000 foodies watched the battles in 10 official categories.

Since its debut in 2012, WFC has brought food stars to TV, awarded more than $1.5 million in prize money and created “Food Sport” to the culinary world. The winner of the chili category will then compete against the other categories (including burger, steak and seafood). The overall winner is awarded $100,000.

Texas Chili Red is the major competition at the Washington state cookoff. It’s the traditional chili (meat and sauce). Washington State Chili Cookoff follows Tolbert rules. The Original Terlingua International Frank X. Tolbert - Wick Fowler Memorial Championship Chili Cookoff (OTICCC) was founded in 1967. It’s known as the “granddaddy of all chili cookoffs” in the United States and worldwide.

In addition, the competitors will prepare an open category chili. This may be anything from a chili verde to a vegetarian.

“We are combining the traditional, purist side of the chili world with Tolbert with the WFC excitement and prize monies for people to advance and compete. There have been three of our competitors make the Top 10 and are looking for Washington to bring home the top prize this year,” Stearns said.

Remember When at the Heritage Fair 2018

The fourth annual Heritage Fair for the Museum of the North Beach Saturday, October 13 features a live and silent auction, with many artistic, decorative and collectible items up for bid. These auctions are a fundraiser specifically for the New Museum Building Project. The museum is working to bring back a wonderful piece of history in the form of the landmark Moclips Northern Pacific Railway Depot. This replica will be the new home for the museum of the North Beach.

Enjoy a buffet dinner of baked Quinault salmon, baked herb chicken, top sirloin, vegetable casserole, assorted salads, desserts and no host bar.

We are having an exciting program with the focus on Remember When, in a lively and entertaining panel discussion and video presentation featuring some of the most well-known names in the North Beach area. Green Lantern Lunch Program feeds Kids in the North Beach

She saw the need and she's filling it for kids in the North Beach. Founder of Green Lantern Lunch Program Phyllis Shaughnessy developed a program delivering lunches to kids in the North Beach.

Volunteers pack lunches and go out to kids at their homes. Green Lantern Pub stepped up as a venue to assemble the lunches. St. John's Chapel by the Sea (PCUSA) has supported the effort in many ways including half of the congregation volunteering with GLLP.

4K for Cancer Team Seattle bicycles into Moclips

4K for Cancer Team Seattle returns to the North Beach in August. This is the fourth year St. John's Chapel by the Sea PCUSA of Moclips has hosted this group. There are 27 bicyclists in the 2018 version. They have cycled over 4,000 miles to fundraise for young adults with cancer.

Everyone is invited to meet and greet with them 6-8 pm, Wednesday, August 8. There will be pizza and more to enjoy while you converse with members.

"These are an inspiring group of people. Each year, we hear their stories, learn about the trip and are amazed at the calibre of person you find with 4K for cancer," St. John's Chapel by the Sea PCUSA church member said.

Thursday morning, there is a Dedication Circle. The group gets ready for the day's ride. On their legs, names are written of those whom they are dedicating their journey to, that day. It may be a person dealing with, survivor of, or who has died from cancer.

"We would like to thank Ocean Shores IGA, Frontager's Pizza, Seagate Restaurant and Lounge and Moclips Country Store and Deli for donating food for the riders." A local to Ocean Shores said.

Also, as they head through Grays Harbor, Thursday, August 9. Team Seattle members will be interviewed on SUNNY 102.1 radio by Rhys Davis. Jodesha Broadcasting will also include interviews on The Jet with Johnny Madson and on Coffee Talk KBKW with Doug McDowell.

Locals thank ShuJack's Bar and Grill for providing Philly sandwiches for lunch. They praise all of the people and businesses that are involved in the 4K benefit for cancer and make it a goal for anyone traveling through Grays Harbor to get involved in such a great cause.

Lavender Festival finds a home in Grays Harbor

Dale's Lavender Farm hosts the third annual Lavender Festival. This two-day festival was July 21-22, 2018 on Ocean Beach Road. This is the creation of Tom and Dale Dineen, the owners of the property and home, on-site for this annual event.

Vendors dotted the farm, with a view of the lavender fields. Both days were sunny and inviting, bringing out locals and visitors to this rural Hoquiam location on the way to the North Beach.

Musicians played on stage and strolled the grounds, setting a relaxed and enjoyable vibe for visitors and guests of the event.

People were able to visit vendors with lavender products and more. Gnomes, plants, teas and a variety of items were available for your shopping pleasure. Many were local vendors and new businesses to Grays Harbor.
